When your appointment is bulk billed, this means there are no out of pocket costs for the services you received from your doctor. Instead, they bill Medicare for your appointment and accept the rebate as the full payment.

This payment comes from the Medicare levy. Australian taxpayers contribute 2% of their taxable income towards this levy. If your doctor does not offer bulk billing or opts for mixed billing, you will need to pay the full service fee. Although, you can still claim a Medicare rebate for eligible services, even if they are not bulk billed.

The medicare rebate is when you pay for a service in full and then apply for a partial rebate. The amount of this rebate will depend on a variety of factors, such as the services you received. Some clinics will apply for the rebate for you electronically, whereas others will require you to do this yourself.

How often you should visit your doctor depends on many factors, such as your age, health status and any risk factors affecting you. Generally, a routine check up is needed every three years if you’re under 50 and healthy and once a year if you’re aged over 50.

All Australian citizens are eligible for bulk billing from our Vermont doctors. However, Australian permanent residents, those applying for permanent residency, New Zealand citizens and temporary residents covered by a ministerial order are also eligible for Medicare.
